India face Argentina in 9-12th place classification game

After a deeply disappointing exit in the league phase of the 10th FIH Hero Junior Men’s World Cup hockey tournament being played at the Major Dhyan Chand National Hockey Stadium in New Delhi, the Manpreet Singh-led Indian team will look to redeem itself when they rub shoulders with Argentina in the 9-12th place classification match on Thursday.

The yellowshirts’ 3-3 drawn game against Korea put them out of the quarterfinals as their Asian counterparts qualified by virtue of a superior goal average after both teams were tied on points in Pool C behind pool toppers Netherlands.

All the pre-tournament hype surrounding India having the team to go the distance went up in smoke after their drawn tie against Korea.

The hosts could run into arch-rivals Pakistan in the next classification match on Saturday provided they put it across Argentina and Pakistan pip South Africa in the other classification game.

It goes without saying that India can at best finish 9th in this edition after missing out on a quarterfinal berth.

It may be worth recalling that India had finished 9th in the 2009 Junior Men's World Cup jointly hosted by Malaysia and Singapore, where they humbled Poland 4-0 in their play-off tie.
