Women’s Hockey World League final: Hosts Argentina set up lip-smacking semis clash with Netherlands

Hosts Argentina gave their fans plenty to rejoice about as they rallied from behind to vanquish Korea 3-1 to seal their berth in the semifinals of the FIH Women’s Hockey World League final being played in San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina.

The Las Leonas fans were left disappointed as their home side failed to break the deadlock in the opening half and there was despair for them when the Koreans went ahead through ace striker Park Mi Hyun in the 46th minute.

The home crowd were stunned to silence but mercurial Luciana Aymar soon brought  smiles on their faces when she essayed a superb pass to Carla Rebecchi, who rattled the Korean cage five minutes later.

The goal pepped up the Argentineans as they attacked with more venom – they were awarded a penalty stroke in the 58th minute which Noel Barrionuevo coolly make the most of.

Carla Rebecchi fired home the third goal in the dying seconds to consign the Asian giants to their tournament exit.

Argentina will now play Olympic champions Netherlands who rode on a solitary strike from Dutch star Lidewij Welten to put it across New Zealand 1-0.

Earlier, Rachael Lynch produced a sparkling goalkeeping performance effecting two high quality saves as Australia pipped Germany 4-2 in  a penalty shootout after both teams were tied 1-1 in regulation time.

Eileen Hoffmann earlier gave Germany the lead before Ashley Nelson restored parity for the Hockeyroos.

The Aussies will now face England in the semifinals – England got past China 1-0 thanks to a second half penalty stroke from Georgie Twigg.

Both the semifinals will be played on Saturday.
