Women’s Hockey World League Final: Australia hold hosts Argentina 1-1

Hosts Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw by Australia in the FIH Women’s Hockey World League final which got underway in the Argentinean city of San Miguel de Tucuman.

Playing in front of a capacity packed crowd, the Las Leonas – the current world champions – opened the account when Delfina Merino tapped home from close range.

Australia’s riposte was firm as Ana Rodriguez deflected a robust strike inside the Argentinean ‘D’ to restore parity.

The second half was devoid of goals as both teams settled for a 1-1 draw.

In other matches, Olympic champions Netherlands made a stunning beginning to their campaign, annihilating Germany 6-0.

China vanquished New Zealand 2-0 while England rallied to crush Korea 6-2 in two other opening day matches.
