11th ranked Argentina stun Netherlands 5-2

11th ranked Argentina caused a major flutter when they stunned 3rd ranked Netherlands 5-2 in their opening tie of the FIH Hockey World League Finals at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.

The Las Leonas struck first blood through drag-flick expert Gonzalo Peillat as early as the second minute of play. The Dutch responded swiftly and equalized through Mink van der Weerden in the 5th minute.

Facundo Callioni regained the lead for Argentina in the 8th minute and that’s how the scoreline remained at half-time.

The Netherlands  restored parity for the second time when Seve van Ass – son of national coach Paul van Ass – scored in the 50th minute.

Argentina were undaunted by the Dutch second goal and struck twice in a space of four minutes through Pedro Ibarra and and Guido Barriedes leaving their fancied opponents to do all the catching up.

The South American outfit hammered the final nail in the Dutch coffin when Juan Ignacio Gilardi converted a penalty stroke three minutes from the final hooter.

Earlier, second ranked Australia edged out 5th ranked Belgium 3-2. Kieren Goevers scored twice for the Kookaburras, while Jacob Whetton produced the match-clincher. Tom Boon and Thomas Briels scored for Belgium.
