BPCL, Punjab Nartional Bank shine in 24th Lal Bahadur Shastri hockey tourney


Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) began their campaign in the 24th Lal Bahadur Shastri men’s hockey tournament on a bullish note, humbling Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) 3-1 in a league tie at the Shivaji Stadium in New Delhi.

BPCL shot into the lead in the 7th minute through Jarnail Singh, but ONGC neutralised the early-goal advantage with a Harpal Singh goal three minutes later.

BPCL regained the lead just before half-time through Amir Khan before Harjeet Singh wrapped up things with the third goal midway through the second half.

In another game, Punjab National Bank rode on a superlative hat-trick from Yudhvir Singh to ease past RCF 4-2. Damandeep Singh scored the other goal for the winners.

RCF surrendered the initiative after taking an early lead through Gagandeep Singh before Simrandeep Singh scored a solace goal at a juncture when the match was well and truly in the bag of PNB.

In third game of the day, Indian Air Force (IAF) pipped Food Corporation of India (FCI) 3-1. Sukhdev, Virender and Davinder scored for the winners, while Munish Rana reduced the margin for FCI.

As many as eight teams are participating in the tournament, which will run till January 3. Defending champions Air India have given the event a miss as they are currently playing in the All India Scindia Gold Cup in Gwalior.
