Hockey World League Final: Netherlands knock out Olympic champions Germany in quarterfinals

Third ranked Netherlands sprang a big surprise knocking world number one Germany out of the quarterfinal stage in the FIH Hockey World League Final tournament, scripting a 2-1 win at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.

The Oranje brigade called the shots from the outset and shot into the lead through Mink van der Weerden’s penalty corner goal in the first minute – the lead was doubled a few minutes later when Seve van Ass rattled the German cage.

Pushed on the backfoot, Germany tried hard to come back into the contest, but the Dutch kept them at bay and led 2-0 at half-time. Germany needed a strong showing in the second half to mount a comeback into the match and captain Oliver Korn inject some hope for them reducing the deficit in the 38th minute.

The Olympic champions had twenty-two minutes to force a result in their favour, but the Dutch thwarted all their designs to book their spot in the semifinals. The win will be some kind of a sweet revenge for the Netherlands, who went down to Germany 1-2 in the final of the 2012 London Olympics to settle for the silver medal.

Earlier, fourth ranked England continued its stellar run in the tournament, putting it across fifth ranked Belgium riding on Tom Carson's solitary first half goal.
