India unlikely to play in 2014 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

The 2014 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament suffered a big setback with India reportedly voicing its reluctance to take part in this year’s edition. Sources in Malaysian Hockey Confederation – the organizers of the event – say the Blueshirts will not be part of the 2014 edition.

The absence of India could dilute the profile of the 2014 edition. And to make matters worse for the organizers, Pakistan has offered to cry out – it is learnt that the Greenshirts have not responded to the MHC invitation.

It may be noted here that both India and Pakistan have always taken part in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

India have won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup five times –1985, 1991, 1995, 2009 and 2010. The Pakistanis have won it on three occasions - 1998, 2000 and 2003.

According to Malaysian Hockey Confederation sources, only four teams –  Australia, South Korea, Canada and France – have confirmed their participation along with hosts Malaysia for the 23rd edition of the tournament.

What is significant is that MHC has not given up hope on India playing in the 2014 edition. It is learnt that the MHC had asked India to reconsider its decision and is keeping its fingers as it is keen to make the event a seven-team affair.
