Jason Wilson’s brace helps Delhi Waveriders humble Jaypee Punjab Warriors 3-1

Delhi Waveriders made a winning start to their campaign in the 2nd Hero Hockey India League, beating Jaypee Punjab Warriors 3-1 in front of their home fans at the International Hockey Stadium in Mohali.

The Delhi outfit held the aces early on but the Punjab side were not prepared to make it a one-way traffic. The fast-paced encounter saw both teams failing to break the stalemate in the opening quarter.

The Green brigade finally forged ahead in the second quarter when Talwinder Singh rattled the Warriors’ cage off a nice pass from Akashdeep Singh from the top of the striking circle.
Jaypee Punjab Warriors restored parity when Mumbai boy Affan Yousuf scored to trigger celebrations in the home crowd.

The equalizing goal refused to dent the morale of Delhi Waveriders, who regained the lead in the third quarter when Akashdeep Singh came up with a superb assist for unmarked Australian Jason Wilson to slap home.

The Warriors had an opportunity to equalize again in the closing stages of the third quarter, but Sandeep Singh failed to make the most of a penalty corner, slamming it wide.

They needed to go all out in the fourth and final quarter, but Delhi Waveriders had other plans. Akashdeep Singh capped off a dream day, coming up with his third goal-scoring pass for Jason Wilson to tap home for his second goal of the day to make the scoreline 3-1.

Sandeep Singh muffed up another PC chance in the dying seconds of the game as the Green Brigade went on to glean full five points from the comprehensive win.
