Kalinga Lancers pull off famous 4-1 win over Ranchi Rhinos

Kalinga Lancers chalked up a stunning 4-1 win over reigning champions Ranchi Rhinos in the 2nd Hero Hockey India League at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar. The HIL debutants may have been out of the semifinal reckoning, but dished out a superlative performance in front of delirious home fans to upset the applecart of Rhinos.

The Orange brigade rode on a three second quarter goals to wrest the initiative before rounding off the tally in the final quarter, following a goalless opening quarter.

Smarting from a narrow 3-4 loss to Uttar Pradesh Wizards a day earlier, the Lancers struck the opening goal through e Aran Zalewski in the 23rd minute. Devinder Walmiki, brother of Indian forward Yuraj Walmiki, doubled the lead in the 28th minute before Argentine drag-flicker Gonzalo Peillat converted a penalty corner to enable his side go into the breather with a cozy 3-0 lead.

Needing to produce something out of the ordinary, the Rhinos narrowed the margin when Pradhan Somanna scored in the 45th minute. Trailing 1-3 going into the final quarter, the Rhinos needed some magical performance to score four goals and glean full points, but the Lancers kept up the pressure and even netted a final minute goal via Gonzalo Peillat to hand their supporters a nice debut gift.

With this win, Lancers have 16 points from nine games, while the Rhinos, continue to remain at the fourth spot with 24 points from eight matches.
