23rd Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Defending champs Australia continue goal-feast, drub South Africa 7-0

Reigning champions Australia maintained their dominant run in the 23rd Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, lapping up their third win on the trot decimating South Africa 7-0 in Ipoh. Trent Milton gave Kookaburras the lead in the 30th minute before Jamier Dwyer doubled the lead a few minutes later.

Australia muffed up a slew of penalty corners and finally made it count with their sixth one when
Nicholas Budgeon fired home close to half-time to give his side a commanding 3-0 lead.

There was no let up from the Aussies in the second half as they made the scoreline 4-0 through Jamie Dwyer in the 46th minute. Drag-flicker Chris Ciriello converted his team’s eight short corner in the 52nd minute before Daniel Beale racked up the sixth goal in the 55th minute. Mark Knowles hammered the final nail in the opponent’s coffin when he notched up Australia’s seventh goal as they walked off the pitch with a facile win.

This was South Africa’s third consecutive defeat which leaves them at the bottom of the points table. They had earlier lost 2-3 to Malaysia and 0-5 to China.

Meanwhile, hosts Malaysia chalked up their second win humbling Canada 3-1- it was latter’s third straight defeat. Korea moved into the second spot in the points table after edging out China 3-2.

Earlier in the second round of matches, Australia thumped Canada 6-0 while Malaysia drew China 2-2.
