Afghanistan, Thailand withdraw from Asian Games men's hockey qualifiers

The Asian Games hockey qualifiers, which are slated to commence in Bangladesh from March 15 to 23, have been hit by the last-minute withdrawal of Afghanistan and Thailand. The pull-out of these two teams has reduced it the event to an eight team affair.

Interestingly, both teams were placed in Pool A, which has now become a three team group featuring hosts Bangladesh, Singapore and Hong Kong. Five teams - Oman, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Qatar and Iran – are clubbed in Pool B.

It’s not clear whether the Asian Hockey Federation – the organizers of the event – will rejig both the pools and the fixtures.

It may be worth mentioning that the top six finishers will qualify for the 2014 Asian Games to be held in Incheon, South Korea in September.
