Germany beat South Africa 5-3, win series 3-0

Olympic champions Germany humbled South Africa 5-3 in the third and final Test at Hartleyvale in Cape Town, to win the three-match series 3-0. The second-ranked Germans pulled ahead through Martin Zwicker in the third minute with a field goal.

The South Africans offered a splendid riposte, not only equalizing but going ahead through goals from captain Wade Paton and Andrew Cronje in the seventh and ninth minutes respectively. The joy of the home fans was short-lived as Germany equalized through Thilo Stralkowski six minutes later.

The Black-and-white brigade regained the lead close to half-time when Lukas Winfelder converted a penalty corner. Germany took full control of the proceedings when Marco Miltkau rattled the South African cage in the second half.

Dan Sibbald scored for South Africa to make the scoreline 3-4, but Germany rode on Winfelder’s penalty corner goal to romp home 5-3. Earlier, in the second Germany whipped South Africa 5-1 having won the opening Test 7-2.
