Ligament injury forces German hockey start Moritz Fuertse out of 2014 World Cup

Celebrated German midfielder Moritz Fuertse will miss the Rabobank 2014 World Cup after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during his team’s training session in Cape Town, where the national team is playing a three Test series against South Africa.

The 29-year-old playmaker, who played an inspirational role in Ranchi Rhinos’ inaugural Hero Hockey India League crown, is expected to go through the rehab route and will return to competitive action in a few months’ time.

It may be worth recalling that Fuertse had sustained a similar injury in 2011, but recovered in time to play his part in Germany cornering glory at the 2012 London Olympics. He was also member of the gold-winning 2008 Olympics team.

The skilled medio has quite a few milestone wearing the German jersey – he was part of the German team that won the 2006 World Cup in Monchengladbach as well as part of the Champions Trophy-winning national team in 2007 at Kuala Lumpur.

There is no doubt that Germany will miss Fuertse in The Hague, but the black-and-white brigade have enough arsenal to go for glory in the 2014 Rabobank World Cup. The team will bank on the likes of Oscar Deecke, Nicolas Jacobi, Christopher Ruhr, Florian Fuchs among others to take a shot at glory in the marquee event.

Meanwhile, Germany minus Fuertse walloped South Africa 7-2 in the opening Test.
