Punjab men, Haryana eves dazzle in senior nationals


Punjab routed Manipur 11-1 in a Pool B tie of the 4th Hockey India Senior Men’s National ‘A’ Division Championship being played at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium in Lucknow.

The Punjab outfit rode on a sizzling hat-trick from Harpreet Singh and a brace of goals from Ajay Kumar, Parvinder Singh and Prabhdeep Singh to assert their supremacy in no uncertain terms. In fact, it was Manipur who took an early lead through Jayenta Meiti in the 9th minute, but after that it was Punjab who towered over their opponents scoring six times to lead 6-1 at half-time before pumping home five more goals to complete the decimation job.

In a Pool A game, Services Sports Control Board humbled Chandigarh Olympic Association 2-0.

Meanwhile, defending champions Haryana walloped Hockey Odisha 11-0 in a Pool A tie in the 4th Hockey India Senior Women’s National ‘A’ Division Championship in Bhopal. Navneet Kaur stole the show for Haryana netting five goals and was well complemented by Navjot Kaur who also chipped in with a fine hat-trick. Bharti, Ritu Rani and Sonika scored once for the winners.

In Pool C Sports Authority of India crushed Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd 6-2, while in Pool B Uttar Pradesh drubbed Bihar 7-1.

In Pool D games Punjab whipped Kerala 14-1 while Karnataka swamped Maharashtra 7-2.
