Former Indian hockey
goalkeeper and twice Olympian Devesh Chauhan is among many other players and
officials who have been banned by Hockey India (HI) for their unbecoming
conduct on the pitch. The punishments were handed out as Hockey India’s
disciplinary committee decided to crack the whip on players engaging in poor
on-field conduct.
Devesh, who represented India at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and 2004 Athens Olympics, had complained to the tournament director R.V. Shelar that umpire G.S. Sangha had verbally abused him when he appealed for a foul during the recent National hockey championship semifinal match between Uttar Pradesh and Air India at Lucknow.
Interestingly, Shelar in turn, had alleged that Devesh who was UP’s captain in the nationals, was settling scores with Sangha for a previous incident in the Surjit hockey tournament, following which HI had summoned the two for a hearing and the duo were slapped with a three-month ban after they failed to turn up before the HI disciplinary committee.
The Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy team also faced the music as HI banned eighteen members for a month for temporarily walking off the field during their match against Odisha in the National women's hockey championship at Bhopal. MPHC coach Paramjit Singh and manager Usha Nimbalkar were also handed a two-month ban and would be on probation for one year from October 1.
Umpire P. Anupama, who did not wear the umpires’ uniform and also behaved rudely during a semifinal match of the National junior women’s championship at Mysore, was banned for two months.
