Sardar Singh-led Indian men’s hockey team arrives in Netherlands

Sardar Singh-led Indian senior men’s hockey team arrived in the Netherlands on a nine-day exposure trip as part of its preparations for the 2014 World Cup to be held in The Hague from May 31 to June 15.

The national had earlier left New Delhi by an early morning flight on Wednesday to fine-tune their  preparations for the marquee event, which they have won only once in 1975 at Kuala Lumpur.

The 21-member squad has a new vice captain in drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh and marks the return of Gurbaj Singh from long international wilderness.

India will play five practice games – two against the Dutch club sides, one against Belgium national team and two games against the Dutch national side.

The Blueshirts launch their tour with a game against Dutch club Leiden on April 11 after which they face another club outfit HGC on April 14.

The Terry Walsh-coached side will play against Belgium on April 15 before they lock horns with the Netherlands in two practice games on April 17 and 19 respectively.
