The Indian hockey player Lalit Upadhyay has arrived
in The Hague to be part of the Indian squad for the upcoming World Cup. The
Varanasi lad, who was part of the seven standbys picked for the mega event, had
a great run in the 2014 Hero Hockey India League (HIL) for debutants Kalinga
Lancers and was able to grab the attention of Indian head coach Terry Walsh,
who was the coach of the Odisha franchise.
Lalit replaced Ramandeep Singh, who severely injured his right eye socket and cheekbone during the second half of play, following which he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent a surgery and was subsequently ruled out of the marquee event.

Lalit will feature in India’s second practice game
against South Africa on May before they commence their World Cup campaign
against world number five Belgium on May 31. The youngster, who earlier played
in the now-defunct World Series Hockey, will be expected to deliver the goods
alongside experiences guys like SV Sunil, Dharamvir Singh and upcoming young
turks like Akashdeep Singh, Mandeep Singh and Chinglensana Singh besides
another replacement player Yuvraj Walmiki.
