New synthetic turf laid at Imphal Hockey Stadium

Hockey is a popular sport in the North Eastern state of Manipur. The state boasts of the likes of former speedy winger Thoiba Singh, Brojen Singh, goalkeeper Neelkamal Singh, Tikken Singh, M. Kulajit Meitei, former national women’s team captain Surjalata Devi and Tingongleima Devi.

There is Manipuri flavor in the current men’s and women’s teams. The likes of Kothajit Singh and Chinglensana Singh has turned out for the national men’s team while P Sushila Chanu, Pinky Devi, Lily Chanu Mayengbam and N.Sanarik Chanu are part of the women’s team.

The sport recently got a big push infrastructure as the Imphal Hockey Stadium underwent a facelift. The
Manipur Sports Department recently replaced the old synthetic turf at the Stadium with a new generation turf installed with the TX artificial grass system.

The new turf will be similar to the one to be used during the 2014 World Cup to be held in the Hague, Netherlands from May 31. The Imphal Hockey Stadium has the capacity to accommodate 8,000 spectators and it also has the provision to accommodate 100 players at one time in the sports complex building which is next to the Stadium.

One hopes the laying of the new turf will encourage more youngsters to take to hockey and contribute to the development of the sport in the state.
