Lalit Upadhyay to replace injured Ramandeep Singh in Indian World Cup squad

The Indian men’s hockey team received a big jolt when its talented striker Ramandeep Singh was embroiled in a serious injury during their opening World Cup warm-game against Argentina at Hague.

The Punjab & Sind Bank forward severely injured his right eye socket and cheekbone during the second half of play, following which he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent a surgery and is ruled out of the marquee event.

Hockey India has picked Lalit Upadhyay – one of the seven standbys – as a cover for Ramandeep. Lalit will leave for The Hague on Monday.

Like they say in sports someone's loss is someone's gain and Lalit will be hoping to make the most of this opportunity and make the country proud in The Hague.

India will face South Africa in their final practice tie on May 28 before they kickstart their World Cup campaign on May 31 against Belgium.
