A pall of gloom
descended on the Pakistan hockey fraternity over the recent demise of former Olympians
Anwar Ahmed Khan. The 81-year-old
Bhopal-born sturdy centre-half nicknamed ‘Rock of Gibraltar’ because of his
strong play as centre half, was one of
the last few surviving members of the 1960 gold-winning Pakistan’s Rome
Olympics team.
Anwar was also part of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics as well as the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where Pakistan bagged a silver medal each. Touted as one of Pakistan's best centre-halves, Anwar also featured in two Asian Games. He was a key member of the national team that pipped India at the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games and also figured in the 1962 Asian Games.
The former great also coached the Greenshirts to a coveted gold in the 1974 Tehran Asian Games. He was coach of the Pakistan team that finished runners-up in the 1975 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.
