Star striker
Jamie Dwyer is not part of the Australian men’s hockey team for the upcoming
Commonwealth Games. The celebrated forward has opted to take rest after the
national team’s World Cup glory. The side will be led by Mark Knowles, who will
be playing in his third consecutive Commonwealth Games.
Apart from
Dwyer, striker Glenn Turner is missing while Rob Hammond has recently retired. The Kookaburras
features 12 members of the World Cup winning side that triumphed in The Hague
recently. Aussie junior captain Daniel Beale, Trent Mitton, Andrew Philpott and
Tristan White are the four new faces.
Besides Knowles,
the 2014 World Cup final hat-trick man Chris Ciriello, Fergus Kavanagh, Trent
Mitton, Eddie Ockenden, Simon Orchard and Matthew Swann were also part of the
side that beat India 8-0 in the 2010 final in New Delhi.
21-year-old Jeremy
Hayward, who was named the Young Player of the Tournament at the recently-held World
Cup, is part of the Glasgow-bound squad.
The team management
have appointed Graham Reid and Paul Gaudoin as joint head coaches of the men’s
team following Ric Charlesworth’s to fast-forward his retirement ahead of the
Commonwealth Games.
