Indian hockey team's Commonwealth Games camp begins on June 26

The Indian men’s hockey team will kickstart their preparations for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games from June 26 at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in New Delhi. The Indian team promised much, but only flattered to deceive, settling for a ninth-place finish, which they attained comprehensively getting the better of 7th ranked Korea 3-0 in a classification game.

India were left to rue late goals which cost them dear in their games against 4th ranked England and 5th ranked Belgium, where they had the opportunity of forcing a respectable draw. They also frittered away a lead against Spain to settle for a scratchy 1-1 draw, which could have paved their way for a top-eight finish.

The camp for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games is expected to be a three-week affair and Indian team head coach Terry Walsh is likely to announce the team for the said camp over this weekend.

It may be worth recalling that India had put its best foot forward in the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games, where they finished runners-up, but not before being handed a 0-8 pasting by powerhouse Australia in front of their home fans. Until the 2010 edition, India never had made a podium finish in the Commonwealth Games.
