Australia’s World Cup-winning men’s
hockey team coach Ric Charlesworth has fast-tracked his retirement plans and
now has arrived at a decision not to be in the ‘hot seat’ for the upcoming Commonwealth
Games in Glasgow next month.
The celebrated Kookaburras coach, who is
riding high after shepherding the national team to their World Cup triumph, had
earlier in March indicated that he wanted to spend more time with his family
and would step down after the Commonwealth Games. Interestingly, Hockey Australia has
swung into action to find his replacement after Charlesworth announced his decision
to quit three months back.
The four-time World Cupper, who hold
the unique record of winning the prized event as a player and as coach twice,
believes the World Cup win is the best way to go out on a ‘high’. Apparently, Charlesworth is not keen on being
away from home for three weeks for the Commonwealth Games.
Hockey Australia is expected to name his
replacement – more of an interim solution for the Commonwealth Games over the
new few days. The 2014 win was Kookaburras’ third
World Cup triumph – they had earlier won the 1986 London World Cup and the 2010
New Delhi World Cup.
